INTRODUCTION |
|
In January 2017, two Iraqi refugees, Hameed Khalid Darweesh and Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, were detained at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The reason? They belonged to Iraq. Darweesh had worked in Iraq for the US government for 10 years while Alshawi was coming to join his wife who worked for a US contractor. The detention was a result of a ban imposed on seven Muslim-majority countries by the US President Donald Trump (Trump), barring their citizens from entering the US. This travel ban caused chaos and massive protests. Many green-card holders and human rights and activists’ groups and organizations filed lawsuits against the travel ban that they alleged was unconstitutional.
The travel ban was one of the many policies introduced by Trump after he became the 45th President of the US in January 2017. Trump ordered a repeal of existing policies like Obamacare, froze regulations which were pending final approval, temporarily suspended premium processing for H-1B visas, etc. He also ordered that a concrete wall be built against neighboring country Mexico.
